We’ve made a start planting up some of the shrubs we’ve been overwintering in the garden. Gone in over the weekend have been 2 cotoneaster franchettis, climbing rose, jasmine officinale and euonymus fortunei. April’s a great time to get them planted as the ground is nice and moist and warming up nicely. We’re still keeping an eye out for any frosts, but we should be safe.

One of the lavendula’s has also been moved to a different position so we have a nice focal point on the middle of the back border. Other plants to move have been the Holly from the back border to the North facing right-hand border and also a Fern over to the shady South facing border. We’re clearing a corner to move our nice bench to; creating a focal point for the garden and also a great place to sit and enjoy a full view of the garden.

We were really please to get our Corylus (Corkscrew Hazel) planted in as well. This will be the only tree in the garden and should work really well with it’s catkins appearing before the Spring foliage, all on it’s intriguing twisted branches.

The planting plan for the garden is working well, always changing as we go along. But this will provide us with a good base of plants to watch grow over the years. We’ll look at filling in the gaps with good annuals (Sweet Peas, Marigolds, Petunias) while they spread.

And then there’s the back fence which we are looking to make really dramatic with some spectacular climbers like Passiflora and Clematis viticella.

It’s been a far while since my last post. It’s been a mild winter, which has made a nice change from last winter when so many plants succumbed to the cold.

The first job on my list is to get a plan together of the garden, then from there I can draw up a planting plan and also a list of jobs to do and an order to do them in! Time is always tight with the garden so this will be essential to have a list of work to do; then the garden can move forward. I’ve got some ideas of designs for the garden. Now’s the time to get the plans drawn up!

I was given some plants over the summer (only just got around to mentioning!). These were given to my by Jill Davies from a great local firm Herbs Hands Healing.

They are cuttings from her own garden and hopefully will fill some nice areas in mine. There’s the climbing Akebia quinata, Lady’s Mantle and a Purple Violet.

So, we’ve got a really nice spell of warn weather late on in the summer.

Some of the veggies have finished now (the courgettes, radish and carrots), but this good weather is great for ripening off the tomatoes and sweetcorn that are still going! We’ve got a few French beans still going also, but it’s mostly now looking towards autumn planting and then winter care and plans for next year.

The big plan is to decide on how to landscape the garden to maximise the space.
